Cla-Fa-Wa-Hoo!

Every-Other-Annual Clawson Family reunion was held in my backyard this year. Well, my "hometown" backyard.  Actually just down the street from where we had our wedding reception.  Let's use quick stats to sum up this awesome week:

Location:  Cornet Bay, at Deception Pass State park.  wonderful scenery, perfectly sized gathering hall for everyone.  An economy kitchen and dishwasher to boot- finally a perfect food making spot for our crew.  The only drawback is  the cabins.  A bit dull, dark, damp, musty... okay I also think my mom gave her kids the worst ones, the rest of the family seemed to be okay. The teens loved being together in one big bunk house. And at least we all got our own place!

In Attendence:  12 adults, 6 "marrieds" with 2 babies, and 40(ish) single cousins ages 6-24.  Most of which are teenagers these days.

Old traditions:
Talent show-  Eight  Hilarious lip synches to some oldies songs.   Already love watching the video. Go fam. Especially because the choreography and costumes were all made up the morning of.  It was so good I vote we do a flash mob next year.   I'm already planning it.

Dance party-  older teenagers who knew some moves, and we actually had space to boogie.  definite bonus.
Glow sticks-   used at dance party.   Spectular fun.

Bu's Butique-  Gabriel liked the shelves full of candy right at his level. I had quite a few girls helping me manage the store this year.  Our business seems to be growing!  In case you didn't know, the items from Grandma Bu's store come from Oriental Trading or the Dollar Store, and the Currency used in the store this year was sticks.  (a stick the length of Bronwen's hand to be exact).

Everyone arriving and departing at different times four days before and four days after the official reunion dates.  Always a party.  My mom is amazing for keeping track of all this.

Crafting:  we made sailboats out of sticks, driftwood, triangles cut out of muslin, a drill and bit of hot glue. They are beautiful and unique!

Family History- fun and games style.  This year we focused on getting to know the Aunts and Uncles via games like Operation, Jeopardy, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.

Gabriel's first kayak ride. Thanks Uncle Michael!

New Traditions
Hike to Deception pass bridge at sunset

Exploring tide pools at Rosario  (have you ever done with 50 people? It's not easy. Good thing there is plenty of room.)   Gabe was a trooper in the Boba wrap.

Ferry ride to Friday Harbor!    We saw seals in the harbor, loved the lavender shop, and were treated to an ice cream by the generous Bu. Actually, after she paid for us all the ice cream shop gave us the last one free because we bought so many!     Gabe did great in the jogging stroller the whole time.

Salmon bake. YUM!

Sailing!  My Dad rented a big boat and took 2 crews out each day. Heavenly bliss! The only thing better than sailing is sailing with your family!

Best quote:
"Which is better, EFY or Family reunion?"- me
"Family reunion hands down!"- 16 year old anonymous male cousin

I started a "quote board" (ya know, like your college days) this year, which turned into 3 quote boards.... They are still hanging up at Grandma Bu's as I write.
Others I can remember at the moment:

"This place is beautiful and I haven't left the airport!"

"Did you just pick a living thing off the ground?!"  "yeah"

double digits!!

Gabriel is 10 months old !

He babbles nonsense, gives kisses and hugs, climbs up anything in sight, is a good eater, and makes life enjoyable and interesting.

He loves to eat sausage bowtie pasta with the family, and he loves yogurt. He has stopped liking regular oatmeal and cream of wheat, but mommy will help him like those again soon. He eats yogurt and fruit most every morning.

Going to church has become quite interesting!!  He is quite the active boy!   Most days I am not able to get any house cleaning or bill-paying, or girls-camp-figuring done (he likes to maul me as I work on the computer) so we get out of the house and go play. We go to 7-peaks (SLC) for a couple hours, or to the aquarium, we go to the library, or play with friends.  He loves other kids.  Especially older ones. Babies don't interest him, but anybody over the age of 1 is an automatic playmate for Mr. Gabe.

Here are some recent pictures

NIne months have flown by

Gabriel is growing into quite the toddler!  He crawls effortelessly around the house, anywhere he wants to go including up and down stairs (we finally just took down our makeshift baby gate as he would fling himself over it anyway) and out onto the front or back porch if the doors are left open. He doesn't ususally stray too far though- as he likes to be near his mama.

He smiles and laughs all day long. He loves to play peek-a-boo, and to chase and be chased. He really likes Dad's RC car now- he follow it around and then catches it and lifts it up by the antennae like a trophy fish.  He will sit on my lap and let me read books to him if they are entertaining "lift the flap" books which he gets to participate in". Otherwise he is moving.  On the ground, or cruising around furniture, couches, chairs, beds, toilets.  He learned the flush the toilet yesterday and was very proud of himself. He also learned to turn on the bathroom faucets.   If I set him in the sink he'll pull and tug at the handles again and again, while water drips all over him.  He could have stayed and played for an hour- but we compromised on 20 minutes.

He is good in his stroller and usually falls asleep if I am just going for a run.  He doesn't like to run through sprinklers in it though- woops.

He is eating all sorts of big boy stuff:  he loves yogurt and thinks cheese is okay. He tried scrambled eggs and wasn't a fan. He likes crackers, noodles, cooked veggies,  oatmeal, cream of wheat, rice,  and of course cookies.  He helped me make applesauce chocolate chip cookies the other day and was a supreme taste tester.  The mixer fascinated him.

About 3 weeks ago he started sleeping through the night- just like that! On his own.  He has been doing it about 5-6 nights a week now and I couldn't be much happier.

love this cheese smile!

nice hat!  It matches! Too bad this kid can't keep white things white- otherwise he'd get to wear it more...

NINE MONTHS STATS:

Height: 30 inches  (I believe this is off a bit, as he was 29 inches at 6 months.... or both of them may be off, and coming from someone who measures infants heights frequently, it is not an easy thing to do and may easily be off a couple inches. just sayin')
Weight:  20.5 pounds
favorite person:  mommy
second favorite person:  Daddy
third favorite person:  Auntie M.
words:  none, but he babbles with lots of consonants
sign langage skills:  none that he has shown us yet, but he sure seems to understand a lot more
favorite book:  Peek-A-Boo Farm
favorite playmate:  any kid older than him. Preferably around age 2
best at getting into:....the dishwasher (when I am loading or unloading)  or knocking the broom off the wall in laundry room
ninja skills: climbing over fabric baby gate, sliding down stairs backward (record speed), bursting into tears seemingly on demand, flipping onto stomach whenever laid down for diaper change, and getting mom to make several food items each meal to find one I want to eat today.....

Arbor Day

What better way to celebrate Arbor than walking through amazing gardens and coming home with a tree!  A FREE tree!  It doesn't get much better than this. I only wish Bjorn could have been with us.  Alas, he was at work. Luckily, we had awesome friends to explore the gardens withe and soak up the sun. This was my first time to Red Butte Gardens, and I am told it is much prettier latter in teh summer when more things are growing.  The vines and wires and mazes are usually covered in greenery.  Still- it was great for a nice spring walk.

love Barrett's cheese smile!

NOTE:  we are trying to take pictures of us the the KC hat in remembrance of Auntie KC (my sister) who is on a mission in Argentina.  We take the hat on fun outings with us and send her all the pictures so she can be there in spirit.

8 months old

There's crawling... and then there's CRAWLING.

At first it was really cute as he moved around the room, stopped to pick up toys, smile at us, put something in his mouth every now and then.  Now he is full throttle darting from room to room, never staying put.   Any and everything on the floor goes into his mouth.  I am trying to vacuum a lot more often but it's not easy!  I am becoming quite skilled at the quick blind sweep. He cries from reflex, but I am over and done with it in seconds.   We've started moving "pretty things" into higher locations.  My child is taking over my  house.  I knew this day would come (and secretly- I love it!)

He is a good sleeper and good napper. Not great, not perfect, not bad, just good.

Mangoes are one of his new favorite foods. They are up their with bananas.  He eats and likes most everything we feed him.  Avacados and green beans are low on the favorite list- but he eats them.   We use the baby grinder a lot to mash up whatever we're eating.  I've figured out breakfast with oatmeal or cream of wheat.  After it's made I scoop out a large spoonful for him then we pour our respective milks over the cereal, top with fruit, and eat.

8 months old! (day after)
